Kyoto Knife Making Class: Which Kind?

Forging a knife from iron against sharpening, handle fitting and finishing classes in Kyoto: what your hands do, how long each takes and what the price buys.

Updated November 2026

Most knife workshops in Kyoto do not make a knife: they sharpen one, fit a handle to one, or finish a blade a professional has already made. Only one starts from raw iron. Kendo Experience’s Authentic knife making experience at a blacksmith in Kyoto gives you three hours at a studio in Sakyo Ward, heating the iron in a furnace, hammering it into a blade with the instructors beside you, then sharpening and polishing it into a knife of about 13 to 15 cm that you take home in a box. It was per person from $151, checked November 2026, with 1,092 reviews and free cancellation up to 24 hours before. If you want a sharpening skill rather than a blade you forged, a one-hour class is the better buy, and the cards below show where.

The calendar above is the forging workshop. It runs at two studios in Sakyo Ward: Studio NIN Yase unless you are told otherwise, or Studio NIN Kendo depending on bookings, and staff message you before your visit to confirm which. The same workshop is also sold on Viator by Atelier NIN, at its own price, as Authentic Knife Making Experience at a Blacksmith in Kyoto.

What each workshop includes, checked November 2026.

The difference between the kinds is real. In a sharpening or fitting class the blade arrives finished and your work is on its edge or its handle. At the forge the blade does not exist when you walk in.

The workshops are spread across the city. The forge is in Sakyo Ward, about 12 km by road from Kyoto Station; the Viyago Japan workshop is in Arashiyama, in the west; Aritsugu’s shop is on the Nishiki Market street in the centre.

Is the forging workshop worth its price?

It costs several times a sharpening class, and you are paying for time and equipment: three hours with instructors, a furnace, tools, blacksmith clothes, and the knife itself, packed in a box with a bag. Worth it, if the point of the day is to have made something; less so if what you really want is a knife to cook with, because a forged knife from a three-hour beginner session is a souvenir you use, not a shop knife. Three things to know before you pay:

  • It is physical. Reviews from late October and early November 2026 describe the hammering as hard work on the arms. Some of the work involves danger, and the customer is responsible in the unlikely event of an injury or accident.
  • The handle. A wooden handle is an upgrade that costs extra.
  • Children: check first. Children under 15 are listed as not suitable, while a separate note says they should be accompanied and protected by adults. Ask before booking anyone under 15.

Prices, ratings and review counts from the listings (GetYourGuide checked November 2026; Viator checked November 2026). Operators price by date and season, so treat the figures as the shape of the market, not a quote.

Two price traps

Arashiyama. Which plan the lowest GetYourGuide price for Viyago Japan's workshop buys is not stated, and the from-price is a date-specific discounted price; read the option before you book. The same workshop, sold by Viyago, lists the Beginner sharpening plan and the Custom knife-making plan as separate options. Initial stamping is a paid add-on, in the Custom plan only.

HIRAI. What GetYourGuide’s lowest figure for the Hirai workshop buys is not stated, and its includes and description disagree on engraving: an engraving fee is listed as included, and laser engraving is offered for 1,000 yen. The workshop's Viator listing is a separate offer. Treat the two as different offers, and read what your chosen option includes; the GetYourGuide listing has two meeting points, depending on the option.

What to wear and bring

For the forge, socks; blacksmith clothes, a towel and water are provided. For HIRAI’s handle fitting, wear clothes you do not mind smelling of smoke: the handle is fitted over a flame. In Arashiyama, arrive at least 15 minutes early, because guests more than 5 minutes late cannot take part. Kyoto knife sharpening class covers the sharpening classes in more depth, and taking a Japanese knife home covers the flight.
