The Natural Whetstone Museum

The Natural Whetstone Museum is in Kameoka, not Kyoto city: free entry, Thursday to Sunday, a JPY 3,000 sharpening workshop, and the train and bus from Kyoto Station.

Updated November 2026

The Natural Whetstone Museum, 天然砥石館, is not in Kyoto city: it is in Kameoka, west of Kyoto, about 30 km by road from Kyoto Station. Entry is free, and it opens from 10:00 to 16:00, Thursday to Sunday; it is closed on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays and over the New Year holidays. Its sharpening workshop on natural whetstones costs JPY 3,000 a person for 60 to 90 minutes, with your own knife welcome, booked on the museum’s own site. Those are the fees as the museum revised them on 22 October 2026, checked November 2026. Getting there takes a train and a taxi or a bus, so treat it as a half day.

Cancelling a reservation 7 or more days ahead is free (a 3.6% transaction fee is excluded); 6 to 2 days ahead costs 30%, the day before or the day itself 50%, and a no-show or a cancellation without notice 100%.

The museum does not state a minimum age or a group size for the workshops. If you are bringing children or a group, ask the museum when you reserve.

Getting there from Kyoto

The museum’s first route is the JR Sagano Line to Kameoka Station, about 20 minutes from Kyoto Station, then a taxi of about 20 minutes, about JPY 4,400; the museum warns of waits for taxis at peak times, March to April and October to November. The other route: take the JR Sagano Line from Kyoto Station to Chiyokawa Station, about 20 minutes by train, then the F41 or F43 bus, about 7 minutes. The buses are few: from Chiyokawa they leave at 10:44, 12:44 (not on Saturdays or Sundays) and 13:44, and the buses back leave at 12:10 and 15:11 (the museum’s access page, checked November 2026). The museum marks this bus information “only available for the afternoon workshop”, so ask the museum which buses to rely on for your reservation. There are no taxis waiting at Chiyokawa. Do not plan to walk from Kameoka Station: the museum is about 10 km from it by road.

Because the museum opens only Thursday to Sunday and the buses are few, plan the day around the timetable and a 60 to 90 minute workshop, and confirm the buses with the museum when you reserve. Arashiyama is on the same JR line, between Kyoto and Kameoka, so the museum and an afternoon in Arashiyama can share a day.

When a class in Kyoto suits you better

If you are in Kyoto from Monday to Wednesday, or a half day in Kameoka is too much, a one-hour sharpening class in the city gives you the lesson without the bus. Viyago Japan's workshop in Arashiyama sharpens a Japanese kitchen knife with its handle attached, or adds a blade choice and handle fitting in its Custom plan, and the knife goes home with you. It was per person from $19 on promotion, usually $38 (checked November 2026); which plan that price buys is not stated. Kyoto knife sharpening class compares it with the other classes.
